Obituary

 

Kathy Scartz Harris, 61, of Atlanta passed away on Easter Sunday morning. She was born on July 29, 1949 in Fairmont, West Virginia, and moved to Atlanta as a small child. She attended Southwest High School with her late husband, James William Harris ("Jim"), who passed away in 1999 after a battle with cancer. Kathy graduated from the University of Georgia and, upon graduation, married and moved to Princeton, NJ where Jim was finishing college. In 1971, Kathy and Jim moved to Durham, NC where Kathy was a teacher and Jim was a law school student, before returning to Atlanta in 1974 to start a family. Kathy enjoyed raising her children and was always the first to volunteer to be a room mom or chair a committee. She was involved at their schools, Christ the King and Marist, and was an active member of the Catholic church community. She made lifelong friends playing tennis at the Cherokee Town Club and through the Junior League of Atlanta. She enjoyed spending time with her extended family and loved family vacations to the gulf coast area. Kathy is survived by her two children, Jennifer Harris Gotch, 34 (married to Joseph Ernest Gotch, Jr.), and Matthew Thomas Harris, 32 (married to Erin Penn Harris), her two grandchildren, Piper Harris Gotch, 5, and James William Harris II, 4 weeks, her brother Dominick Thomas Scartz, Jr. ("Don") (married to Nita Scartz), and an extended family including Jim's mother, Marinel Smith Harris, his two sisters and brother, their spouses, nieces, and nephews, most of whom reside in the Atlanta area. Kathy was a devoted daughter, wife, sister, mother and grandmother and was known for her wonderful spirit and happy demeanor as she fought multiple sclerosis for her last 14 years.
